Experience With Lomi

I found this product intriguing, so I saved up and decided to get this composter for myself. It has been great for turning it (kitchen waste) all into usable compost. Depending on my “mixture” it takes about 4-5 1/2hrs to complete a batch. I tend to run one about every other day. It is a bit loud while doing it’s “baking” but I’ve gotten used to it. To clean out the completed compost you will want to use a rubber or wooden utensil, nothing metal as you don’t want to scratch off any of the non-stick surface inside the canister. Lid is easy to get on & off…if its not, then you don’t have the canister properly inserted.

This has been great for my garden and I’m glad to know I’m not tossing so much into the garbage. Items you can add: cheese, meat (no bones), banana peels (wouldn’t put the stems in), fruit, plant trimmings, veggies, grains (bread, chips, crackers…), noodles. Adding “paper” products is a bit misleading, it needs to be from one of Lomi’s approved list. Great product! I’m trying to encourage my family & friends to get one.

Does It Really Work?

It works by applying heat to food scraps to break them down over a period of hours and then dries them out, so you get an end result that looks like dirt but Pela (the manufacturer) calls “fertilizer.”

The Lomi Composter works really well, though it does eat up countertop space and has a fiddly lid. However, it also has a spacious capacity and can handle a variety of food scraps with ease. If you’ve been interested in investing in a Lomi and have the space, you might want to give a try.

How To Use

The Lomi has three modes, which have different purposes:

  • Eco Express: With this mode “waste shrinks considerably, and is perfect for adding to your compost or green bin.” Per the manufacturer, this takes three to five hours (I found this to be true, though think five hours is more accurate).
  • Grow Mode: This takes 16 to 20 hours and results in a “nutrient rich organic fertilizer” that can be “mixed into soil (1:10 ratio) and added to houseplants, gardens, or even your lawn,” Pela says. (This mode operates at the lowest heat setting of all three to “conserve microbes.”)
  • Lomi Approved Mode: This takes five to eight hours and “can break down Lomi Approved products and packaging (such as bioplastics) into dirt that can then be placed in your green bin,” according to the company.

Pros

  • It comes with a manual to guide you on how to use effectively
  • It works as advertised.

Cons

  • Takes a lot of space (Spacious capacity)
  • It very expensive
  • It gets loud when in use.

Conclusion

The Lomi works exceptionally well at its intended purpose. I liked that it has three modes for those looking to compost for different intentions and I think it’s worth buying for intentional customers.
